2016 PDGA National Tour - Are You Ready?

Friday, February 19, 2016 - 13:24

Are you as excited as we are about the 2016 National Tour Elite Series? If you aren’t, you should be! In the spirit of recognizing and supporting the premier professional events in the sport of disc golf, the PDGA would like to invite you to come out and watch the action of the 2016 season as it unfolds. Come witness the best in the game as they compete for individual event titles, as well as the title of the 2016 National Tour Elite Series Champion!

The PDGA National Tour was created in 2003 to introduce the world to the exciting sport of disc golf and to its top male and female professionals. Over the past 13 seasons, more than 12,000 players have competed in the NT series for total cash purses and series bonuses in excess of $2 million.

The 2016 National Tour Elite Series will consist of seven tournaments, including a series-crowning finale at the Brent Hambrick Memorial Open (BHMO) just outside of Columbus, Ohio. The tour tees off on March 2nd at The Memorial Championship presented by Discraft in Scottsdale, Mesa, and Fountain Hills, AZ. It then winds its way across the country, concluding in August with the BHMO.

Add to those two events the familiar staples the likes of the Dynamic Discs Glass Blown Open, the Kansas City Wide Open (now in its 34th year), the “Steady” Ed Memorial Masters Cup, the Beaver State Fling, and the Vibram Open at Maple Hill, and we have a recipe for another electrifying year on the National Tour. In addition to the individual event purses, players from both the professional men’s and women’s division will earn points based on their finish in these events to determine a National Tour Elite Series Champion.

The Elite Series will be complimented throughout the season by two new disc golf tours: Jussi Meresmaa’s Disc Golf World Tour and Steve Dodge’s Disc Golf Pro Tour. Think back to 2003 when the National Tour emerged as the lone option for touring professionals. Now, 13 years later, professional disc golfers have multiple options for high-profile disc golf events, creating a heightened and more dynamic exposure for the sport’s brightest stars.

Looking beyond the National Tour, we are excited to see the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships in Emporia, Kansas and the PDGA Amateur and Junior Disc Golf World Championships in Madison, Wisconsin crown our newest World Champions. Two new PDGA Major Event venues will be used in 2016. The US Women’s Champion will be crowned at the US Women’s Disc Golf Championships in Sabattus, Maine while the age-protected titles will be awarded at the Tim Selinske US Masters Championships in Stockton, CA.

We will also see the European Masters in Stockholm, Sweden in July. Additionally, the newly-formed and co-sanctioned PDGA & World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) Team Disc Golf World Championships will be unveiled in Vancouver in mid-August.

Whether you are attending a PDGA Major, National Tour, or any one of the thousands of PDGA-sanctioned tournaments this season, please join us in thanking your tournament directors, club members, and volunteers who continue to promote our sport through countless hours of hard work and dedication. Disc golf continues to flourish at the grassroots level, and we owe our thanks and appreciation to these generous individuals.

It seems that almost every aspect of the game we know and love is growing at an ever-increasing rate. In 2015, there were more tournaments, more players, more added cash, more spectators, more media exposure, and more disc golf companies/manufacturers than ever before. With that kind of exponential growth, we can and should expect 2016 to be a year to remember!

We’ll see you on the course!
