Round 2 of the 2016 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships presented by Dynamic Discs is in the books after another brutally hot day in Emporia, Kansas. The heat was complimented by wind in the afternoon, making the already difficult conditions a bit more testing.

Hokom Makes a Move From the Chase Card

After playing their first round at Peter Pan Park, the Open Women’s division switched it up and headed over to Emporia Country Club for Round 2. Country Club is about as close to exact opposite as it gets after playing Peter Pan, with much bigger tee shots and more open fairways.

The lead card consisted of Catrina Allen #44184, Paige Peirce #29190, Jennifer Allen #15354, and Valarie Jenkins #17495. Emporia Country Club is the “big arm” course of the four courses being used for the event, including a fair amount of flagged OB lines and cart paths adding to the hazards.

Hokom's forehand drive on Hole 6 at Emporia Country Club led her to an easy par.

Current distance world record holder Jennifer Allen started the round hot, grabbing birdies early to go three under par through the first five holes. Jennifer and Catrina battled back and forth for the lead most of the day not realizing that Sarah Hokom #34563 was making moves from the chase card.

Hokom’s score of one under tied Catrina for the hot round of the day, moving her up to tied for 2nd place with Paige Pierce, three off the lead. Val Jenkins will round out the lead card this afternoon for Round 3, this time playing Jones East, broadcast live on SmashBoxxTV starting 12:50pm (CDT).

Wysocki Catches and Passes McBeth

Going into the round, a battle between Paul McBeth #27523 and Ricky Wysocki #38008 was shaping up, one we have seen so many times in the past. McBeth’s round of 15 under par for Round 1 at Jones East seemed untouchable on Tueday, until hours later when Wysocki finished the same course at 14 under.

Round 2, playing Jones East once again, began very different for McBeth. Right out of the gates he took his first bogey of the week on Hole 1, and watched as Ricky made his putt for birdie, instantly giving the lead to Ricky. And Ricky wasn’t about to let off the gas.

For the second day in a row, Ricky went on a rampage, carding eight straight birdies from Holes 4 to 11. Ricky was on pace for his second bogey-free round until Hole 15 where he took his one and only bogey of the tournament thus far. With a score 48 (-13) for Round 2 against Paul’s 52 (-9), Ricky took the lead overall.

Nikko Locastro #11534 stayed on pace with Paul and Ricky for most of the round and really turned on the burners during the back nine. Everything seemed to be on track for Nikko to card a bogey-free 12 under par, but hole 17 got the best of him. After placing his drive 30 feet past the basket, all Nikko had to do was knock one down to get his 8th birdie in a row. The wind was a much bigger factor than the previous round, lifting his birdie putt up and into the top of the basket, only to have it roll all the way back to where he had just let it go. A missed second chance meant he would tap in for a three-putt bogey. He finished strong with another birdie on 18 and turned in a score of 11 under par that allowed him to remain on the lead card heading into Round 3.

One of Nikko's many tap-in birdies during Round 2 at Jones East.

Joining him on Round 3’s lead card will of course be Ricky and Paul, and newcomer Devan Owens #25168 who shot a 12 under par Round 1 and 10 under par Round 2 to earn his lead card position.

In the middle of Round 2, Paul McBeth came to the realization that he misplayed the green on Hole 7. In true champions form, Paul McBeth voluntarily turned himself in and took a two stroke penalty, changing his round 1 score from -15 to -13. Paul will start Round 3 in third place because of the penalty, handing over the second place spot to Nikko Locastro.

Ricky now leads by four overall heading into his round today at Emporia Country Club. With a target on his back and huge arms at his heels, Ricky will have to rely on his deadly accuracy and putting to hold on to his lead. The Open lead card tees of at 2:30pm CDT. Scores will be up and running as usual on pdgalive.com.
